Home health nurses face several hazards at work

Home health nurses provide important medical care for patients who are trying to remain in their homes instead of having to move into a care facility. While this service is one that these patients rely on, it’s one that comes with significant risks to the nurses.

One of the most challenging aspects of this job is that the environment is largely uncontrollable. The nurses and home health companies don’t have any control over the conditions in a person’s home. This can lead to many hazards that the nurses can face.

Common hazards of the job

One of the most common hazards these nurses face is the risk of slips, falls and trips. Poor lighting, cluttered walkways and unkempt properties can cause sudden accidents. Unlike hospitals and healthcare centers, homes aren’t regulated, so there’s likely no signs to warn about wet floors or other hazards.

Another risk that these nurses face has to do with the patients themselves. Musculoskeletal strain from lifting and moving patients who have mobility challenges is common. There’s also a risk of patients becoming violent, which can lead to significant injuries.

Prevention is the company’s responsibility

Preventing injuries to home health care nurses is the duty of the home health company. Every home that’s being visited by the nurses must be evaluated, and the same is true for the clients. Any potential issues should be noted so that they can be addressed.

There must be proper training for all employees. They must be empowered to address safety issues in the most appropriate manner, and they must be provided with proper personal protective equipment.

When a home health nurse suffers an injury, getting medical care can be a challenge, so there must be specific steps for them to follow. They should be encouraged to get care immediately. Workers’ compensation should cover these expenses, as well as provide certain other benefits. Seeking assistance from someone familiar with these matters may be beneficial.
