We recently discussed some of the reasons for workplace accidents on construction sites. At the top of the list are falls, which lead to the greatest percentage of fatal accidents on construction sites and also lead to serious injuries for many workers. A fall could result in a spinal cord injury, a traumatic brain injury, or other types of severe injuries that may in turn cause lifelong disabilities.
That said, construction workers often have no choice but to use ladders to work in elevated positions. How can they do so safely?
10 key ladder safety tips
To help workers stay safe on the job, here are 10 tips to keep in mind when working on a ladder:
- Only allow one worker to use the ladder at a time
- Never try to lean to the side from a ladder, even if something is just out of reach
- Use the correct type of ladder, whether that is a step ladder, an extension ladder or another type entirely
- Always climb on the front side of the ladder, not the back support rungs
- Always obey weight limits and other such restrictions
- Be wary of power lines and other overhead hazards
- Always maintain three points of contact when climbing a ladder
- Never ascend or descend a ladder in a hurry
- Do not stand on the very top rungs of the ladder
- Ensure that the ladder is set up at an appropriate angle so that it will not slide or tip
This type of safety advice can certainly help, but accidents can still happen. Those who have suffered injuries need to know what legal options they have.
