Florida employees should use caution in the heat

Most people who live in Florida know that the summer days are often sweltering, but they may not realize the hazards that come with working in that type of heat. It’s critical that anyone who’s out in the heat takes steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.

While workers should do what they can, the onus is on the employer to ensure that workers have what they need to remain safe. There are multiple serious illnesses that can occur from being in the heat too long because of the increase in core body temperature. Let’s look at a few.

Types of heat-related illnesses

Heat exhaustion is one illness that can occur. It happens when the body suffers a significant loss of water, primarily due to sweating. It can lead to dizziness, weakness, thirst, increased sweating and irritability.

Heat stroke is even more serious. It can be fatal without proper care. The body’s core temperature can increase to 106 degrees or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. People who have this condition may suffer seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion and slurred speech.

Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscle tissue dies and releases large proteins into the bloodstream. Seizures, kidney damage, weakness, muscle cramps, and abnormal heartbeats are all possible.

Workers who suffer an on-the-job heat-related illness should receive immediate medical attention. They may suffer long-term issues that prevent them from being able to return to work immediately.

Getting workers’ compensation benefits can cover the cost of medical care and provide partial wage replacement. Other benefits might also be possible. It can help to have legal guidance to help ensure that a worker gets all the compensation they’re due.
